From Andretti Autosport now Andretti Global…

INDIANAPOLIS (Sept. 5, 2023) – Andretti Autosport, a Championship-winning motorsports organization, today announced a major rebranding initiative that will see the international organization adopt the branding of Andretti Global, the identity previously named as the parent company to the U.S.-based race team.

As a brand that is built on a foundation of racing excellence, the new Andretti Global name will unite all aspects of the organization under a single identity, more closely aligning with the team’s already-established legacy. Andretti Global currently operates in eight motorsports platforms racing across six continents with an appetite to expand its worldwide footprint into other major motorsports series.

Along with the name change, the current Andretti Autosport shield will be replaced with the Andretti Global logo. As each of the 2024 racing seasons get underway, fans can look forward to a new digital experience from the most trusted name in motorsports with the rebrand additionally bringing a new structure to the team’s social media presence.

Andretti Formula E will be the first of the Andretti Global teams to take on the new branding as the reigning Drivers’ World Championship team kicks off Season 10 with testing in October.

MICHAEL ANDRETTI, CHAIRMAN AND CEO, ANDRETTI GLOBAL

“I’m proud of what Andretti Autosport has accomplished over the years, and all the memories that have come with so many special moments. Just as proud as I am of our past, I’m equally excited about our future. As we continue to expand and build a global racing institution, our goal is to be engrained in the culture of our fans, teams and partners. This rebrand is a major milestone in our team’s journey, but we are only getting started. We are determined to achieve success and confident that there are big things in store for Andretti Global.”

DAN TOWRISS, PARTNER, ANDRETTI GLOBAL

“The words Andretti and motorsports are synonymous, and I’m impressed and excited by the worldwide fanbase and reach of the Andretti name. I’m proud to be working with Michael and his team to build that name and legacy into an even stronger brand that reflects our ambitions and values. We are committed to excellence, and I believe our work will benefit our fans and partners around the globe.”

Max Verstappen (Red Bull) makes it three Dutch Grand Prix wins in a row after securing yet another win at Zandvoort in mixed weather conditions. The race began in dry conditions but that soon changed by lap 2 as the rain came pouring down. Multiple drivers opted to jump from slicks to intermediate tires which proved to be the dominant strategy. Sergio Perez (Red Bull) was one of the first to pit which ultimately handed him the lead position after the pit stops were completed.

Come lap 11 the track started to dry again triggering multiple drivers to pit again for their second stop to go back on slicks. In a seemingly odd turn of events Logan Sargeant (Williams) lost the rear as the track dried up crashing in turn 7 triggering a safety car. The race remained under a safety car until lap 21.

At the restart Verstappen and Perez pulled away ahead of Fernando Alonso in third place. The three held these positions for about 20 laps. Unfortunately Ferrari was forced to retire Charles Leclerc’s car on Lap 41. The car has suffered floor damage which we severely hindering the car’s performance. Verstappen and Perez continued to hold the top 2 positions in the race.

The Rain Returns and Intesifies

By Lap 60 reports of heavy rain were on the forecast. Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) was on soft tires behind teammate George Russell (Mercedes) who was on hard tires. In an effort to make up as much time as possible before the race went wet again Mercedes made a team call to allow Hamilton to pass Russell. The call didn’t have a lasting effect because the rain only held out until the end of lap 60. In anticipation for the coming heavy rain all drivers had entered the pits for intermediate tires except for Esteban Ocon (Alpine). Ocon opted for the full wets. Initially Ocon was skeptical on the call to go on full wets but it ultimately proved to be the best choice as the rain intensified.

Perez suffered from a very poor pit stop but because he was one of the first to pit for intermediates he was able to make up the lost time in the pits to regain P2 while the other drivers were in the pits. Unfortunately, Perez had a spin out at turn 1 which saw him lose track position to Fernando Alonso. The race continued until on lap 64 Zhou Guanyu (Alpha Romeo) crashed triggering a Virtual Safety Car. The rain was very heavy at this point.

Verstappen was able to come in for full wets. Perez came in to follow suit but unfortunately before Perez could exit the pit lane the race was red flagged and Perez ended up losing 3 positions due to the timing of his stop. The strategy call was very questionable as a safety car or red flag was likely given the conditions.

The Race was Red Flagged

The race stewards decided that the race would be restarted. Because Perez was in third at the time of the red flag his decision to pit was no longer detrimental and he was able to reclaim the position on the restart. Conditions started to improve and the teams switched the cars to intermediate tires across the board for the restart.

The race was restarted with a rolling start procedure. The lap went green on lap 66. Verstappen put the pedal down and didn’t look back. By lap 67 Verstappen had already built a 1.3 second lead. Sergio Perez held third place but it was announced that Perez would be handed a 5 second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane. The call came very late but it effectively removed Perez’s chance at a podium.

Russell Suffers a Late Puncture, Perez Penalized

On lap 68 George Russell suffered from a puncture which dropped him to the back of the grid essentially ending his race. In the closing laps Pierre Gasly charged after Perez. Perez was not able to maintain a 5+ second delta and thus would lose the position due to his penalty. Pierre Gasly (Alpine) claimed P3 and Fernando Alonso held on to second place. Perez ultimately settled for P4 after his penalty was applied. Behind, Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari) had a last lap scuffle but Sainz was able to hold his ground and keep P5.

Verstappen crossed the finish line for his 9th consecutive victory in 2023. Red Bull continued their streak having won every race this year. Verstappen extended his championship lead to 138 points ahead of teammate Sergio Perez.

After securing pole position Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) was not able to capitalize on track position and had to settle for P2 in the Tissot Sprint Race at Silverstone. Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP) came out of the block on fire to secure his first win in MotoGP in the Tissot Sprint Race at the Monster Energy British Grand Prix. The conditions in the sprint race were an improvement from qualifying and stayed mostly dry with reports of very light rain in some sectors of the circuit. By lap 6 Marquez had built a 1 second lead however Bezzecchi made a late charge to cut the lead down to 0.366 seconds. Bezzecchi was not able to get past Marquez before the checkered flag flew. Given that conditions had vastly improved relative to rain plagued qualifying. Lap times began to drop dramatically and tires started to heat up.

Championship leader Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo) had an extremely poor start. His start eliminated his chances of catching the front runners by the second lap of the race. Bagnaia finished 14th, one of his lowest finishes of the season. Maverick Vinales (Aprilia Racing) made up 5 positions to secure a podium in the sprint race. In fourth place was Johan Zarco (Prima Pramac Racing) and Vinales’ teammate Alex Espargaro finished in fifth.

Bezzecchi on the Charge

The race had implications in the title race with Bagnaia now only holding a 27 point lead over Maroc Bezzecchi who gained 9 points on Bagnaia by finishing 2nd in the Sprint race. With the Grand Prix tomorrow the championship lead is nearly in reach based on the outcomes of this weekend. Bezzecchi could climb to withing 2 points of the championship lead if Bagnaia does not score any points on Sunday.

This weekend the World Superbike championship landed at the legendary Imola. Temperatures were in the record highs and due to the heat Race 2 had to be reduced by 4 laps amidst safety concerns. After winning the Superpole race Toprak Razgatlioglu seized a rare opportunity. Alvaro Bautista crashed out of race 2 on the first lap opening the door for Razgatlioglu to be able to score more points in a race weekend than Bautista for the first time this season.

Razgatlioglu had the following words for WorldSBK.com, “The biggest problem in the Superpole Race was that my dashboard wasn’t working, the buttons weren’t working and it looked like the electronics weren’t working, so I was full lean angle, zero electronics! Then, I picked up the bike a little bit and I felt a bit but then at some corners, I was sliding a bit strangely. I adapted, like on the lean angle, I was opening the gas very slowly! Finally, I did a very good job and step-by-step I got to Alvaro. I passed him at Turn 9 because I watched him every lap there and he was a bit slower. I said, ‘OK, now I need to pass’ because for me, it’s better that I ride alone at the front. I think my plan worked well but I was riding more than 100%!”

Razgatlioglu Continued

I’m very happy that this year, finally, I’ve won! I waited for this moment, so thanks to my team who did an incredible job this weekend. Every session, we improved the bike but I am also sorry for Alvaro but this is racing, and you try and do your best. It’s the first time he’s crashed. After, I made a plan and didn’t want to risk. I followed Axel and in the last three laps I passed him and took a good pace. In general, I’m very happy this weekend! It’s the first time that Yamaha have won at Imola this weekend and I love this track too. It was very hot this weekend and congratulations to everyone because of this. I think it’s been a very good weekend as everybody’s watched real racing! The Championship is not over; I am riding like before, I’m focussing just on winning.”

The race was a bit rough for many riders. There were 6 separate retirements in the race. Despite Bautista crashing out the race he still holds a 70 point lead over Razgatlioglu in what seems an all but decided championship race. Razgatliolgu showed that there is still some fight in him so we will see how the rest of the season plays out.

Championship Standings After Imola

Lamborghini S.p.A. has unveiled their SC63 LMDH Prototype car. The SC63 will compete in the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup Events in 2024. The review came with great anticipation as rumors have been flying of the design of the car all year. Lamborghini will partner with the Iron Lynx Racing team as an extension of their previous collaborative efforts in the GTD and GTD Pro IMSA classes. The development of the car is part of the clean energy initiative to develop more sustainable race cars. The SC63 will feature a 3.8-liter twin turbo V8 hybrid engine.

From the press release, “The SC63 is the most advanced racing car ever produced by Lamborghini,” says Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO. “The opportunity to compete in some of the biggest endurance races in the world with a hybrid prototype fits with our vision for the future of high-performance mobility. The SC63 LMDh is the step into the highest echelon and into the future of motorsports for our Squadra Corse.” Lamborghini Chief Technical Officer Rouven Mohr added, “Motorsport is, to us, a valuable and demanding proving ground for our technology. The SC63 is an exciting challenge from both a technical and a human standpoint. The development of our internal combustion engine, aerodynamically efficient bodywork, and the overall technical package is a process that has pushed us to constantly raise our own standards.”

What’s Next for the Lamborghini SC63 Project?

The car will compete in the GTP class of the 2024 IMSA Sportscar World Endurance Cup Championship. Lambroghini will also enter the car in the FIA WEC 24 Hours of Le Mans in the Hypercar class. IMSA reports that Lamborghini factory drivers Mirko Bortolotti and Andrea Caldarelli. Former Formula 1 drivers Romain Grosjean and Daniil Kvyat are also linked to the project. An official driver lineup has not yet ben announced. The SC63 will begin on-track testing year as the team will set its sites on the Rolex 24 at the beginning of next season.

Danila Ricciardo will replace Nyck De Vries at Alpha Tauri effectively immediately. The move isn’t surprising considering De Vries has yet to make an impact in Formula 1. Ricciardo is a talented driver who is already part of the Red Bull camp. He’s patiently been waiting for an opportunity to get back on grid. Ricciardo will race in the Hungarian Grand Prix. “I am stoked to be back on track with the Red Bull family!” Ricciardo stated to F1.com.

After 10 races De Vries has not scored points. Alpha Tauri is at the bottom of the constructors championship standings; a foreign position for recent times. His exit was all but guaranteed but the when has now happened. Ricciardo participated in a tire testing event for Red Bull and they loved what they saw in the session and made the move official. Team Principal Christian Horner stated, “It is great to see Daniel hasn’t lost any form while away from racing and that the strides he has been making in his sim sessions translate on track. His times during the tire test were extremely competitive. It was a very impressive drive, and we are excited to see what the rest of the season brings for Daniel on loan at Scuderia AlphaTauri.”

The news comes after it was announced that Alpha Tauri will be rebranded in 2024. The move makes sense from a business and competition stand point.

The #60 Meyer Shank Racing with Curb-Agajanian Acura ARX-06 with drivers Tom Blomqvist and Colin Braun survived multiple yellow flags to win the Chevrolet Grand Prix at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park (CTMP). The win marks the teams second win pending any further investigations since the team won the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway earlier this year. The win at CTMP did not come without drama. In the last hour and a half of the race there were 4 incidents that resulted in cautions on track. The race ended under a yellow flag after an incident with the No. 01 Cadillac Racing Cadillac V-Series.R with 5 minutes remaining. All GTP cars on grid completed 120 laps with the exception being the No. 01 Cadillac.

The Meyer Shank Racing drivers had the following statements for IMSA.com:

Tom Blomqvist – Meyer Shank Racing No. 60 Acura ARX-06

“The racing gods were looking down on us a little bit today. We rolled the dice (with pit stop strategy) to try and go long, and the only way we were going to win that race was if the yellows kind of played into our corner. Thankfully, they did.”

“I’m just so happy for the guys. They’ve worked their back sides off all year long, really. This car has been a lot of work. We haven’t had the greatest run of recent races, so to get the pole yesterday and finish the job off today is just amazing.”

Colin Braun – Meyer Shank Racing No. 60 Acura ARX-06

“I’ve just always loved this place and it’s got a great rhythm to it. When you kind of get that confidence that it’s going well, you can go out and attack straight away, and when it works, it keeps the confidence high.”

“Everybody did a great job. The Acura cars have been fast all week, and our team specifically worked hard. Those yellows played into our favor and I still had a bit of fuel to save, but I knew if I could get a good jump and kind of push hard and build a gap for a lap or two, I could settle in and hit the fuel number. It was a lot of fun.”

Wayne Taylor Racing’s Konica Minolta Acura ARX-06 took second place securing a 1-2 finish for Acura. Driver had the following words, “Before the race, the theme of the weekend was we need to put together a weekend like we are used to and just get back to normal. It just so happened the No. 31 had a bad day and the points came together. We’re happy about that, and happy to get back on a roll of positive momentum. We’ll take a second place to the sister (Acura) car very happily and try to build on that for Road America.”

The No. 25 BMW M Team RLL BMW M Hybrid V8 shared by Connor De Phillippi and Nick Yelloly claimed their 4th podium finish in the last five races. RLL racing is 10 points off of the GTP championship lead.

LMP3

Felipe Fraga made it 3 straight Le Mans Prototype 3 (LMP3) victories for Fraga, Gar Robinson and the No. 74 Riley Ligier JS P320. The No. 74 car held the lead for the majority of the race but briefly lost the lead only to reclaim it int he final minutes of the race. Fraga stated, “It was a crazy race. Today, I think they were a little bit faster than us, especially in the straights. … In the GT traffic I basically caught him like 2-3 seconds in two laps. Then I just had a gap, like he opened into the last corner and I think he didn’t expect me to try in the last corner, and I did it.” The move paid off. However with every winner there is the flip side to the story. Fraga made a late move on Garett Grist in the No. 30 Jr III Racing Ligier similarly to a move made at the 6 Hours of Glen. The stewards deemed no further action was necessary however Crist had other thoughts.

“It’s pretty clear what happened so there’s really not much to say, I guess. I mean, Watkins Glen I raced clean, here I raced clean…I guess we know how we can race, though. Three rounds left.”

The Pfaff Motosports Porsche 911 GT3 R (992) finished second ahead of the WeatherTech Racing No. 79 Mercedes-AMG GT3. The No. 79 car is currently in second place in the championship behind the No. 14 Vasser Sullivan. In GTD the No. 01 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 took the win ahead of the No. 70 Inception Racing McLaren 720S GT3 EVO in second and the Team Korthoff Motorsports Mercedes-AMG GT3 in third.

The FIA have released BoP technical guides for the upcoming racings in Monza, Fuji and Bahrain. After a dominant performance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans the Ferrari 499p Hypercars will receive a double hit in the performance category for Monza. The new technical guidelines state that Ferrari must add 5 Kilograms (11 pounds) of weight and reduce maximum power by 12 kilowatts (16 Horsepower). We anticipate this double penalty will have noticeable effect on the car for Monza. Cadillac has received the most dramatic changes for Monza. They are allowed to shed nearly 31 pounds in weight. However, the Cadillacs will also see a 15 kilowatt (20 Horsepower) max power reduction. The team also appears to be limited with stint energy as well receiving a 15 MJ reduction in max stint energy.

The Glickenhaus 007 has the least dramatic change. They will received a 3 MJ bump in maximum stint energy. You can find the complete BoP for Monza, Fuji and Bahrain below.

Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing) has been in complete control of the world Superbike championship. Last years champion and this year’s championship leader has shocked the field since the season opener and has not let off of the gas. Bautista has now won 16 of 18 races this season. The last two rounds Bautista won all three weekend events totally to 4 hat tricks this season. Yet, this weekend that achievement was denied. Having sat behind Bautista the majority of the season. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon) denies Bautista the hat trick in the super pole race today. This was a much needed win for Razgatlioglu if he is to have any chance of competing for the championship title. The race seems all but over but today Razgatlioglu proved Bautista can be beaten.

It was a marginal win, the gap only being 3 tenths between Bautista and Razgatlioglu in the Superpole race. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) secured a second podium on the weekend in the superpole race. While his championship fight is nearly over. It is good to see some diversity on the podium.

The big story this weekend came in Race 2 for Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing). Petrucci has struggled to find chemistry with his Barni Spark Racing V4R. After making the transition from the MotoAmerica Medallia Superbike Championship in the USA to World Superbike. He has struggled to compete for podiums. Today that wait came to an end as Petrucci secured his first podium of the season after nearly securing the feat in race 1.

Petrucci Addresses His first Podium of the Season

After the race, Petrucci stated to WorldSBK.com, “I didn’t have the pace in Race 1. I reached Jonny because he did two or three laps that weren’t perfect but, in the end, I was not feeling good with the bike. Today, I smelt the podium and I said, ‘I need to try’. It was good because I passed Gerloff, Loka and Lowes, I said ‘no, Jonny again for the podium…in England, a six-time World Champion and 250 podiums… how can I do it!?’. I immediately found a way and I passed him. I had a really good pace. We made a small modification of the setup but not major things. The confidence is growing.”

The top six from WorldSBK Race 2, full results here:

Day 1 of the MotoAmerica Championship at The Ridge Motorsports Park is complete. There were a number of on track incidents throughout the day across the all 5 classes competing this weekend.

Medallia Superbike

Jake Gagne (Fresh N Lean Progressive Yamaha) continues his dominance at the Ridge with a win in Race 1. Gagne took the race by a margin of 8.6 seconds. Ahead of Mathew Scholtz (Westby Racing) in second and Josh Herrin in third. Cameron Peterson had another dreadful day after crashing in Qualifying. Peterson was able to recover in the race but had two incidents one where he ran off the track and a second crash wish ushered him to the back of the grid falling 2 laps behind the race leader.

Gagne stated to the MotoAmerica media, “I was keeping an eye on my pit board. I got off to a great start. The Yamaha gets off to a good start. I went inside because I know Josh (Herrin) is always going to be deep on the brakes. Then, somehow, he runs around the outside of me. I’m like, ‘I don’t even know how he got there.’ Fortunately, it’s tough to make that line so I squared him up and put my head down. I was really happy with the bike. Everything was working good.”

Gagne Commented on Herrin’s Drop Off in Pace

“I was a little bit surprised to see, I know Josh was hurting and I was a little bit surprised to see the gap just kind of going a couple tenths a lap, and then it was up to a second and a half about halfway, and then it started dropping. Honestly, I thought it was Josh. I didn’t know with how fast he was going earlier. I thought it was him, I couldn’t see who was behind me…I could hear the lap before the red flag up over the top chicane, I’m like, ‘Whoever is behind me is on me now.’ It was not a half second, or whatever it was. So, I was ready for a banger for the last three laps. I was going to try to put my head down. I was kind of riding everything I had to keep it on.”

Gagne Continued his Comments

“Trying to get a couple more tenths a lap would have been pretty risky, I think. Unfortunately, it was a bummer to see Cam (Beaubier) go down and the red flag come out. I didn’t know until I got back who had crashed and who was second. A little luck on our side points-wise, but it would have been nice to bring that thing down to the last couple laps. I think that would have been fun racing. Tomorrow it will be ‘the same.”

“Everybody is going to step it up, so we got to step it up a little bit too. But I think we learned a lot from today’s race. I’m just stoked. Of course, after the last couple years, it’s nice to win all these races but I’m a racer and it’s awesome to see the class so stacked and so close. Practice here this weekend, all these guys within a couple tenths. So, it really comes down to figuring out how to do it consistently in the race. Just keep doing our job and look forward to more good racing.”

Superbike Race One

  1. Jake Gagne (Yamaha)
  2. Mathew Scholtz (Yamaha)
  3. Josh Herrin (Ducati)
  4. Corey Alexander (BMW)
  5. Richie Escalante (Suzuki)
  6. PJ Jacobsen (BMW)
  7. Cameron Beaubier (BMW)
  8. Hayden Gillim (Suzuki)
  9. Ashton Yates (BMW)
  10. Max Flinders (Yamaha)

Supersport

Xavi Fores (HSBK Warhouse Ducati) continues his win streak. Fores has won every Supersport race this season and he has not showed any signs of slowing down. Its clear how valuable his lengthy career of experience has helped him adapt to new tracks in the MotoAmerica series. Veteran Josh Hayes secured a hard fought second place ahead of Teagg Hobbs. Stefano Mesa (Tytlers Cycle Racing) and Jarett Nassaney (Altus Motorsports) did not finish the race. The riders will have an opportunity for redemption today in race two.

REV’ IT Twins Cup

Dominic Doyle (Team Iso) received the win after Rocco Landers (Rodio Racing – Powered By Robem Engineering) finished in first but was handed a 2 place penalty for passing a back marker rider under a waving yellow. Landers was visible displeased with the ruling. We do not yet know if he will protest it but its clear the rider was well off of race pace so there may more to the investigation if he chooses to appeal. Blake Davis (N2 Racing/BobbleHeadMoto) finished second place and Landers was demoted to third.

Super Hooligans

Tyler O’Hara denies pole sitter Andy DiBrino the win in race 1. It was a 1-2 for Indian riders O’Hara and Jeremy McWilliams. DiBrino will start on pole again for race 2 and will look to capitalize to improve his points standing in the class. Stefano Mesa was disqualified from the race.

Royale Enfield BTR

Mikayla Moore continued her dominance in the class winning race one by a margin of over 16 seconds. Last years champion Kayleigh Buyck finished second with Sonia Lloyd finishing in third. Moore appears to be on cruise control this year in the class. She had the follow comments for the media regarding a moment where she seemingly lost control of the bike, “I caught a false neutral and instead of going to the higher gear, I thought it maybe didn’t get into gear, so I went into a lower gear, and it got a little out of hand. So, I just shifted quick and then just get back on track without making the bike any more upset than what it was. This morning [Yesterday], I made some suspension changes, and I made some tire pressure changes, and I went out on freshies and gearing changes. So, all those combinations definitely helped for this race.”
