Formula DRIFT: Conor Shanahan Turns Heads in Orlando

Formula Drift

The special thing about Formula DRIFT is given the way the bracket system works anyone can pull out a win. That is exactly what happen when Formula DRIFT Pro rookie Conor Shanahan shocked the drift world with a win in his second PRO competition. This is not to detract from Shanahan’s accomplishments in the Drift Masters Championship where he dominated to become champion at his young age of 20 years old.

“It was the perfect weekend for me,” Shanahan said after stepping off the podium. “Winning the seeding bracket yesterday and taking P1 today was special. Second time in America and I’m lost of words. The event was incredible. The level of driving meant I had to work my ass off to reach first place. Branden Sorensen in the Top 4 battle was on a mission and I really had to find something special to beat him. I can’t thank everybody enough, especially the team for ensuring the BMW was reliable. And I want to repeat this at the next round in New Jersey. I want to stay on top of the box all the way to Championship.”

The Formula DRIFT season is here and the Pro class got things started this weekend. This weekend’s event is the preamble to the larger event next weekend which will feature Formula DRIFT, IndyCar and IMSA. The weather was mostly cloudy with some breaks but ultimately the conditions worsened to rain. James Deane took advantage where others struggled. He was able to secure the win in the opening round of the season for the PRO class. The win was an important one for Deane as he missed out on championship contention last which was supposed to be “his year”. Deane will be looking to continue this form moving forward this season.

Deane’s RTR Motorsports team had to overcome a catastrophic fire that engulfed his Mustang during a Tuesday demo run. After they worked tirelessly to repair the car, Deane handled the weather conditions like a pro and now leads the Championship heading into Round 2 upcoming in Atlanta. His path to the win wasn’t an easy task. At the Round of 16 Deane had to “One More Time” 6 times against Jonathan Hurst and then again versus Fredric Aasbo. The Irishman fought through and never wavered in the final. “P1 BABY! I’m filled with pride on what this team did,” he said. “Nobody gave up, everyone had my back no matter what happened and I wanted to make them proud for what they did for me!

From Formula DRIFT…

After 20 years of competition, Formula DRIFT bids farewell to veteran staff members Judge Ryan Lanteigne and Race Control Director Pat Gentilli. Everybody involved in Formula DRIFT wishes them success for the future. They will be replaced by new faces while some existing staff will take on new roles, creating a number of changes to the 2024 FD Competition Staff roster.

For its 21st season, Formula DRIFT will again have four judges in rotation throughout the year. Replacing Ryan as a judge will be Philadelphia native, Reese Marin (USA). As an experienced driver, instructor, and competition spotter, Reese is both well-known and respected, having played a major role in the grassroots drifting community and more recently served as Chelsea DeNofa’s spotter during his Championship-winning season. Furthermore, Reese has his own YouTube channel where he discusses drifting, judging, and breaks down many of the most intriguing battles between Formula DRIFT competitors. As such, he’s ideally suited to his new role as a series Judge and will take his seat alongside the second new appointment, Vernon Zwaneveld (Netherlands).

Vernon has been a long-standing Judge with the Drift Masters European Championship. He’s among the most active and experienced, having judged more than 38 international drift events in 2023 alone. As a stuntman and drift instructor, he continues to shape the future of the exhilarating sport globally and brings years of firsthand experience.

Vernon and Reese will sit alongside veteran Formula DRIFT Judges Brian Eggert (USA) and Robbie Nishida (Japan) on a rotating basis, with three judges participating in each round.

Outgoing Judge Chris Uhl will assume a new role as Race Control Director. Having served on both the Competition team and having been a judge for three years, Chris has unique experience as the only current Formula DRIFT staff member to have served on both sides of the organization. His considerable experience and insight will undoubtedly benefit the teams, drivers, fans and support staff as he helps to ensure the smooth operation of every FD event this season.

OPENING ROUND

The 2024 Formula DRIFT PRO Championship kicks off on the Streets of Long Beach on April 12-13. The PROSPEC Championships will join the PRO teams for Round 2 at Road Atlanta on May 9-11. The 2023 Formula DRIFT season has concluded. Irwindale offered an initial shock when Chelsea DeNofa was knocked out of the Top 32 competition in the first round. He suffered from a failed nitrous injector. Of the championship contenders both Matt Field and Simen Olsen we also eliminated before the final 8 and due to the maximum points they could attain falling below DeNofa’s championship point count. DeNofa clinched the title without having to make it into the top 16.

DeNofa has dominated in 2023 winning 3 competitions this year for the RTR Motorsports.

Chelsea DeNofa stated after the conclusion of the competition, “I’ve been drifting for 20 years, with 12 years in Formula DRIFT, and you want to win this Championship. The team and I all worked super-hard and we did it! It’s nuts!” an emotional DeNofa said from the podium. “Coming to this event I realized it might actually happen. But I’m leaving the series and if I didn’t win I’d look like an idiot and be wanting to come back for the rest of my life! But the Championship was the goal. In everything I do for the rest of my life, the first thing that goes under my name is Formula DRIFT Champion. And that’s the best!”

DeNofa continued

“I owe it to everyone for getting me here and getting me through the bad weekends. I can’t wait to share what I’ll be doing in the future and drive like a maniac as I always wanted to! When you win one event you realize it’s what you want to keep doing but it requires effort, a plan, a team, crew, engineer, spotter, truck driver; and we did it! To leave my last Formula DRIFT Round with a Championship feels unreal. It’s been an awesome year with three wins, some mistakes, some great battles, and ultimately we ended up with the trophy. So, thank you Formula DRIFT and everybody who’s been a part of the series and my career for the past 12 years.”

Words from the President

President, Ryan Sage added his comments on the close of the season, “Every year at Irwindale there seems to be a standout driver who didn’t achieve great results during the season but comes through at the Final event. And this year it was Nick Noback. He qualified first and beat Odi Bakchis in the Final. While Odi in second place secured second in the Championship, bumping Matt Field to third. But DeNofa managed to take the title after all the drama – his first and possibly last Championship. Congratulations to all the drivers in what’s been an amazing 20th season. And let’s do another 20!”

  2. Matt Field (USA) – Borla Performance / GT Radial Corvette
  3. Simen Olsen (Norway) – Feal Suspension Nissan S14.9

Chelsea DeNofa secured back to back wins in Utah after winning in Seattle making it two in a row for the driver. His win extended his lead to 53 points ahead of Matt Field heading into the final round of the season. The other championship contended had a poor outing which had propelled DeNofa into a really good position for the final round at Irwindale.

DeNofa stated “Utah was a wild event but very different for me. Usually we win by driving as hard as we can and being very precise, but today it was more about luck and making less mistakes than the other drivers. The win feels different but the points move us up in the Championship, which is important going into Irwindale where we’re going to try to enjoy the event. A Championship would be cool but winning every event is the goal and maybe we’ll end up on top!”
